Simultaneous Interpretation Equipment
This is the type of interpretation where you need simultaneous interpretation equipment
UTS Translation Services is revered as the best interpretation company when it comes to the two main types of interpretations: Simultaneous and consecutive translation. That is why we have invested greatly in the acquisition of the necessary technology to give our clients the best service. We have some of the best simultaneous interpretation equipment in the whole of Dubai.
Types of Interpretation
In a meeting where consecutive interpretation is taking place, the interpreter listens to the speaker until the speaker is done conveying a sentence or an idea. He or she then proceeds to render the new interpretation into the specific target language. UTS Interpreters are a specially trained team that employs effective note-taking skills and exercise long memory and retention of words. In consecutive interpretation, longer speech segments are usually used in more formal settings. This form of interpretation does not require the sophisticated technology that is used in simultaneous interpretation and is usually very effective for smaller groups of people. Consecutive interpreters are used during press conferences, business meetings, teleconferences, interviews and one-on-one discourses.
This is the type of interpretation where you need simultaneous interpretation equipment. Usually, this type of interpretation is designed for large group. Since with simultaneous interpretation there is bound to be more than one interpreter, the equipment such as soundproof booths are necessary to minimize interferences that could occur in such a situation. Therefore, every interpreter is given the space and silence to listen to the speaker and convey the message devoid of listening to other people’s language. Owing to the simultaneous nature of this type of interpretation, it is fast and therefore preferred in large gathering with multi-lingual orientation such as international meetings.
As leading simultaneous interpretation service provider in Dubai, we have made it our responsibility to source only the best and latest simultaneous interpretation equipment available in the marketing.

UTS Checklist for Services of a Simultaneous Interpreter
Here is a simple checklist UTS Translation Services has compiled that you should look for when seeking the services of a simultaneous interpreter.
There are two types of booths – portable and in-built. The booth should meet the full requirements of the ISO Standard 2603:1998. According to this document, the booth as simultaneous interpretation equipment should only be used by one language interpreter. I.e., every language interpreter should occupy his or her own both.
The booths should have good visibility enhanced by large windows to the front and sides. The windows should be made of non-reflective glass. The booths are also required to have air-conditioning with fans and thermostats that do not make noise. The air quality in the booth should be 100%. It is also required that the booths have ample working area, document storage, lighting, seating and sound proofing.
The Sound System
As another crucial simultaneous interpretation equipment, a lot of attention should be paid when sourcing the sound system. It is recommended that the installation of the booth be simultaneous with that of the sound and should be done by the same supplier for compatibility issues.
Good quality of sound in both the conference hall and the booth are very important in simultaneous interpretation. It has been known that delegates and interpreters suffer a lot of fatigue and stress in the event of poor sound quality. Good sound quality for a simultaneous interpretation equipment should be 125-12,500 Hz. Other factors that should be considered include the inclusion of dedicated microphones, good quality earphones and enough acoustic room. Since a large number of delegates rely on the headsets, using public address systems is prohibited in simultaneous interpretation.
Among the most important parts of the simultaneous interpretation equipment are:
The interpreter’s Control Panel:
It is required that all consoles in an interpretation booth operate in mute or silently. Beeping sounds should not be heard within the booth. It is also required that they are well labelled: “Listening” and “speaking” indicators should be easy to visualize. Others like tone control, mute and un-mute, outgoing and incoming channels should be labelled very clearly.
Channels: It can be a very grave mistake to confuse channels. There should be a single outgoing channel per language. The outgoing and incoming channels should be separate and well labelled.
The panel should also have tone control and mute buttons commonly referred to as cough buttons.
When it come to the choice of microphones, each interpreter should have their own microphone. In case of transparencies, slides PowerPoint, i.e. audio visuals, the availability of portable microphones connected wirelessly is necessary to enable the presenter or speaker move easily across the room without interfering with the sound quality.
An individual set of high quality earphones is a must for each interpreter. The should be light-weight with dry sound transmitting sound in the range of 125-12,500 Hz. The wired headphones should allow at least 1.5 meters of free cord. This allowance allows the interpreter to reach the shelve easily without removing their headphone in case they want to extract a document.
Once all the sound is set for the simultaneous interpretation, other factors that should be checked involve around the comfort of the interpreters. These factors include fresh drinking water in transparent bottles. These can be in booths or easily accessible. There should also be disposal beans nearby to help in the disposal of unwanted documents. Last but not least, there should be rest-rooms near the booths.
Once every simultaneous interpretation equipment is in place, pre and post conference tests are conducted to ensure that the equipment is in good condition prior to and after the interpretation exercise.
